Year 2: The Sorcerer's
Stone
Harry Potter learns of his parents, and
the magical world they lived in before he was orphaned at an early age. After
10 years of life with his very unmagical relatives, Harry is given a place at
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Plunging unprepared into the
wizarding world, which lies in and around the world of non magical people,
called muggles by magical folk, Harry finds he is famous, and has been ever
since his parents died. For Harry Potter and his parents were magically
attacked by the most powerful dark wizard in the world, and while only Harry
survived he also somehow reduced the evil Lord Voldemort to a lifeless shadow,
all but dead. Harry befriends two fellow students almost instantly, Ron Weasley
and Hermione Granger. Ron is the youngest son of a magical family, and all his
brothers have gone through Hogwarts before him. Hermione's parents are muggle
dentists, but are very proud of their magical daughter. As well as friends,
Harry quickly makes one bitter enemy, Draco Malfoy. The sneering, superior son
of an old and evil family offers alliance to the famous Potter early on, and
immediately offers undying enmity when the offer is refused.
Introduced for the first time to magic,
Hogwarts and its staff and students, Harry begins to settle in and quickly
becomes involved in adventures revolving around a mysterious object removed to
Hogwarts from Gringotts wizard bank, for safe keeping. Safety in this case
comes in the form of Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts and reputedly the
only person Voldemort ever feared. The object turns out to be the legendary
Philosopher's Stone, an alchemical substance capable of prolonging life and
turning anything into gold. Lord Voldemort seeks the stone, to use its life
giving powers to restore himself to his former strength. Possessing Professor
Quirrel, Hogwarts' Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Voldemort passes all
the barriers set by Hogwarts' staff, except the last, set by Dumbledore
himself. Dumbledore placed the Stone in the Mirror of Erised, from where it
could only have been taken by someone who wanted the Stone for itself, not for
the powers it possesses. Harry, Hermione and Ron follow Quirrel, but only Harry
makes it to the final barrier, where he faces Voldemort alone. Once again,
Harry is able to overcome the dark wizard and keep the world safe from his
powers. |
